Ham, Cheese & Pickles is a series of short adventures for children, following three friends who notice things most adults don’t.
Set in a very British neighbourhood and rooted in the 1990s, before mobile phones took over and afternoons were spent outside with friends.
The stories are small, everyday mysteries – the kind that feel important when you’re young, but are totally missable as an adult.
The World
The stories take place in an ordinary neighbourhood, seen from a child’s perspective. Houses feel bigger, distances feel longer, and small details carry more weight than they should.
Adults are around, but often distracted which leaves space for Ham, Cheese, and Pickles to investigate things themselves, sometimes getting it wrong before getting it right.
The Characters

Jonny “Ham” Hammond
Ham is usually the one who decides they’re dealing with a case. He doesn’t always wait for everyone else to catch up before moving, and he’s happiest when there’s something to be done.
- Jumps in first
- Talks like things are official
- Excited to solve cases
Ham isn’t the smartest in the room — but he is the one who gets them moving.
Bobby “Cheese” Cheeseman
Cheese is just glad to be there. He goes along with most ideas, enjoys the company, and assumes things will work out as they go.
- Good vibes
- Emotional glue
- Often a step behind
Cheese doesn’t always spot what’s happening — but he makes things lighter just by being involved.

Sally Pickles
Pickles notices more than she says. She tends to hang back, listening and watching, and only steps in when it matters.
- Quietly Observant
- Rarely wrong
- Lets others talk first
Pickles is usually the one who understands what’s really going on even if she doesn’t announce it as first.
The first collection of short adventures is available as a paperback and ebook.
